I get it, it's the end of the weekend, Sunday night, you've been relaxing and unwinding and doing your thing for two whole days, and Monday looms over you like a bad omen, but honestly, Monday's aren't as grim as we make them out to be.
I know it gets short shrift but honestly it's not Monday's fault guys. Trust me, Monday is NOT to blame.
There was a time when I was also convinced that I hated that first day of the week. I felt sluggish and more than a little resentful that my weekend and my freedom had come to an end and I had to get back to the daily grind.
And therein lies the beautiful nugget of truth, it's not Monday that you hate, it's what you have to do or how you're doing it that's the real problem.
Don't get me wrong, I'm most definitely not one of the good vibes only brigade come to evangelise my toxic positivity all over the place. Believe me I get as fucked off in the morning as the next level headed human but I reiterate… it ain't Monday's baggage, it's mine.
Here's a couple of reasons why your Monday is looking more like a Moanday…. See what I did there?, you're welcome…
YOU HAD A WILD TIME
Weekends should most definitely be enjoyed but if you've partied hard and had no time to rest then chances are you've over exerted yourself and possibly not feeling too lively, likewise if you've rested too much hen snapping back to work mode could feel quite jarring so I'm going to say the word that nobody wants to hear. Balance. Yes my friends, balance is your friend, get the ratio right and you might just start Monday feeling refreshed instead of frazzled.
YOU'VE BEEN BRAINWASHED!
That's right, you heard me. Listening to everyone else go on about how much they hate Monday has got you feeling like you do too. I too have been know to belt out that Boomtown Rats classic as I begrudgingly get dressed and down a coffee on a Monday morning, but a little reframing and asking yourself if you really do hate Monday's or whether it's just become part and parcel of your first day of the week routine can't hurt can it. Turn inward and meditate on your Monday blues and get to the bottom of why, and how you can change it.
IT'S NOT MONDAY, IT'S YOUR JOB!
If you honestly can't face it when Monday rolls around it's probably got more to do with what you have to do than the day itself. It can be hard facing up to the fact that you're in a job you don't like, especially if you feel there's no scope for ditching it and finding something new. But take a look around anyway, see what's on offer and what you can offer somewhere else. Nobody deserves to stay in a job they hate, and waking up looking forward to your workweek is half the life thing already won
YOU'RE UNPREPARED
Preparing for the week ahead should happen on Sunday, use at least some of it to reset and get yourself in order. You could maybe prep yourself a nice lunch to take to work, make sure you have something nice in for your breakfast. And I know this might sound a little counterintuitive to my Monday hating mates out there but setting your alarm just a little bit earlier than you need to so that you can have a decent breakfast, a lazier than usual for a Monday coffee or some journaling time could just put a nicer slant on your day from the outset. Whatever preparations you an make the day before that will help to ease rather than hurl you into the week have got to be a good thing.
TIE UP THOSE LOOSE ENDS
You know on Friday when you're running into the weekend like a bat out of hell, throwing all caution to the wind and heading straight for fun town. Slow down. Tie up your loose ends so that you won't have a mess to come back to next week. Any business that you can parcel up and put a jaunty bow on, do it now, trust me you'll thank me for it in the long run. Ending the week thinking "oh I'll just leave it till Monday" will be one of the main reasons you wake up hating on Monday. It seems like adrag I know, most of the adulting stuff does, but it also makes sense!
My relationship with the most hated day of the week has changed considerably since I came to the realisation that I was the problem. Now I look forward to Monday as a springboard, a fresh start and the chance to do some great things.
