Even if you love your job, there may be times when you feel ready to take on a role with greater responsibility. If you ask a question about a promotion and the answer is "no" for some reason, you can still dramatically increase your odds simply by staying persistent and maintaining a good attitude.
Define your goals and motivations. It's hard to get what you want if you don't know why you want it.
Evaluate company culture and finances. Finding the right time to ask for a promotion is more of an art than a science. If no one is promoted and deadlines are tight, your application may go wrong.
Tell your boss about a promotion. If your boss says you're ready, great! If not, at least now you know what you have to do.
Maintain a positive attitude and be friendly. Keep a smile on your face, encourage others when they're in trouble, and show resilience in the face of setbacks.
Help your colleagues and bosses. If you can establish yourself as a resource for others, you will stand out as leadership material.
Be professional. Show up on time every day and dress well. If you look or act like you're not ready for a leadership role, you're not going to be on anyone's shortlist when they discuss candidates for the next big job.
Do quality work to prove yourself. Let your work speak for you by doing your best.
Look for feedback and implement it. Check in regularly with your boss to see how you are doing. Do your best to implement the feedback your boss gives you, even if it doesn't make sense or feels a bit undeserved.
Develop your skills outside of work. If you know you have gaps in your skills, improve them.
