MONTGOMERY- The Montgomery Bears (4-0, 1-0) opened up District 8-5A Division II play with the 47-14 win over the Dayton Broncos (2-2, 0–1). On the second play of the game, Bears senior quarterback Reggie Williams broke away for a 71-yard sprint to the end zone. It was his first of three rushing scores on the night. The Broncos defense seemed stunned. After a quick three-and-out by the Broncos, Williams hooked up with a wide-open sophomore receiver Luke Piro on the ensuing drive for a 59-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and it was 14-0 in favor of the Bears. The crowd which was packed due to it being their homecoming broke out in a loud roar. On third-and-long, Dayton sophomore quarterback Jerry Prieto Jr. ran in his fourth touchdown of the season for a 23-yard gain with 2:53 left in the opening quarter. The score was now 14-7 in favor of the Bears. The momentum finally started to favor the Broncos. After a Bears three and out, the Broncos got some luck. Dayton forced a fumble that was recovered by Rakin Akmal. This sparked the entire team and crowd to cheer. Three plays into the next drive, Dayton tied it up with a 54-yard lofted pass down the middle of the field for Jaleel Kendrick, who split through a couple defenders and ran it home. Prieto Jr. and the Broncos offense looked to be firing on all cylinders. The Broncos tie didn't last long as the Bears found a way back into the end zone. The PAT was no good. Down 20-14, the Broncos attempted to make a come back. Right before half, the Broncos blocked the Bears field goal attempt. Down 20-14 at half, the Broncos had to a find a way.
This was made even more challenging when the second half begun. Prieto Jr. was out due to his shoulder, so junior athlete Denim Foster stepped in. Denim utilized his legs but the Bears made the Broncos life a challenge all night.
Dayton had 213 yards of total offense. Kendrick, who came into the night with a team-leading 358 all-purpose yards, totaled 65 receiving and 28 rushing.
Merkle Judge and Andrew Soliz were among the Broncos recording sacks.
The Broncos returns home for the first time since Week 1 when it beat Crosby next Friday, 7 p.m. against Nederland (3-1, 1-0).
