Gyms are a Boon to Van Life

People mainly think of gyms as places to work out - and certainly, they can help a great deal in improving fitness. However, did you know that a gym membership can also be very helpful if you're traveling around in a van or RV?

Here's why a gym membership can be a great idea for van lifers out there:

Shower area of a fitness club, with stalls and blue tiles.

Bathrooms and Showers

Just about any gym has bathrooms and showers for members to use.

This can be one of several options for showering on the road if you don't have your own shower.

This can also be one of several options for doing your business on the road, if you don't have a bathroom (or just want a break from a tiny bathroom).

Remember to bring your own towel and toiletries with you into the facility.

Late-Night or 24 Hour Parking Lots

Gyms that have long hours are available when you need them, especially if you're finishing a long driving day late, and need a place to crash and boondock for a little rest.

Just a caveat about this point, though: At the same time, don't overstay your welcome. It's not a highway rest stop, where you can stay a while, or overnight. Rather, staying long enough to work out, shower, and maybe take a quick break is better. This goes especially if the parking lot is crowded. There may also be security on patrol - and too many people lacking in etiquette can result in tighter restrictions. Please be considerate of others.

Exercise After a Long Drive

If you're making a long drive, it'll feel good to move a little every few hours or so. A gym can give you a great opportunity to do this - especially if the weather outside doesn't lend itself to an outdoor stroll.

Best Chains for Van Lifers

Ideally, in picking a gym for van life purposes; it's best to choose one with many club locations, and preferably one that's relatively affordable.

That criteria could vary by region, and your preferences will of course factor in. Accordingly, you might even want to pick multiple gyms, if you can swing it.

Here's a good list of great gyms for van lifers, particularly for traveling through the USA.
