Current seniors at Fleetwood Area High School have received National Letters of Intent to pursue their athletic ambitions in college.
Aiden Soumas, Alivia Neider, and Ava Sallee, who all want to continue sports after high school, received letters of intent to continue doing their desired sports in college.
The National Letter of Intent, or the NLI, is a document that outlines the terms between the college and the student that agrees to have said student-athlete attend the college chosen and be provided athletic financial aid.
"It says names, what college you're going for, and the signature you sign on it. It's basically a public announcement for you to do sports," Sallee says.
Aiden Soumas is planning to attend Kutztown University to play baseball. Alivia Neider, who plans on attending Albright College, is going to play girls' soccer. Ava Sallee is also going to play girls' soccer at the University of Delaware.
Many people sign the NLI for college to add more security for both parties; it's guaranteed that the student will have an athletic scholarship for one full year. Not only does it help assure that bond, but it also helps give a mutual understanding.
It's encouraged for students to sign their letters earlier, especially on National Signing Day. According to NCSA Sports, "If an athlete is confident in their school choice, signing early allows them to wrap up recruiting earlier and focus on their senior year."
There are certain criteria that are in a NLI. According to Spry, "The NLI should include materials about the school and its educational programs, and the offer of athletic financial aid being given. The NLI should be sent to the student-athlete within the appropriate signing period."
