A. The protagonist describes what they see in the mirror
We all know that mirror scene when the protagonist starts describing themselves in excruciating detail. It takes away all imagination. Also, why do they ALWAYS have piercing eyes?!
B. The unrealistic and too detailed romance
The handsome stranger appears out of nowhere, saves her, they fall in love immediately but don't admit it. What follows is a string of very cringey flirting and love making scenes which give waaaaay too many unrealistic details away.
I, personally, am not a very impressionable person, but I can imagine this might make some (younger) people have unrealistic expectations about love. That's just not the way real life works.
C. The author tries to hard to prove that they don't do racism/discrimination
Diversity in books is definitely important, but some authors take it to the extreme.
In the very first page we get introduced to the woman with the beautiful ebony skin color who kissed her gothic, Asian girlfriend goodbye and waved to the Hispanic roommate in the wheelchair.
I have noticed that British books like to use the Eastern European person stereotype. They always seem to be either the criminal or the "too good for this world" cleaning lady. As an Eastern European myself, I am not offended, but it does make my eyes roll.
I honestly think that the overuse of these characters has the opposite effect.
D. Overuse of feminism
Quite possibly the most cringe worthy for me personally.
Just because you're the only female in a job that is mainly male dominated, doesn't mean that every man should be treated as the devil. And it certainly doesn't mean you're automatically the star employee.
I studied electrical engineering and I was the only female at university. And this continued within the work field. And of course, people looked at me with suspicion, but that was equally by men as by women. If the admin ladies had to have a technical question answered, I wasn't their first choice of help.
And this has always been fine for me. I never felt the need to prove myself that I was better just because of my gender.
The amount of feminism that is used in books these days, is honestly not good for anyone's mental health.
What about you? What annoys you the most in books?
