Hi Reader, I'm Cameron. I am an American Studies student in my final year. I spend a lot of my free time writing and I hope to find work in writing for online spaces after graduation.
It has been a chaotic start to my final semester. A dissertation hanging over my head, lots of reading, and trying to find time for myself. All the while a different, equally terrifying monster sits on the horizon, awaiting many final-year students. Graduation!
The long yet quickly dwindling road to graduation has been interesting for me. I've spent a lot of time seeking advice from siblings and friends who have already graduated.
Their advice has varied in success to get me started.
From finding various vacancies where employers were unlikely to select me due to lack of practical experience, to grad schemes that while beneficial, are inundated with applications from other talented potential employees. While other advice has made me feel far more confident as I approach that ever-looming finish line of graduation. Like developing my online brand through the creation of a blog, developing my LinkedIn and The Dots pages, and creating a backlog of work in the event a job requires a portfolio.
To be honest with you Reader, I feel like I've been scrambling to prepare myself for what awaits me after I finish University. I still don't feel as though I am prepared to face that monster waiting for me once I turn in that final piece of work.
What Can You Do To Prepare?
Soon-to-be-graduates, do not fear, because CareerCentral is ready and waiting to help with GradReady to help all of us who are preparing to leave and enter the world of work. GradReady has numerous offerings, from events to resources and options for personal support as you approach graduation.
CV Amnesty
Worried about how your CV compares to other potential applicants? Want to make sure your CV is the best it can be so that employers take notice? CareerCentral will be running a CV Amnesty from the 13th March – 24th March 2023 and the 5th June – 16th June 2023. For CV resources click here, and find out how to improve your CV. I have personally spent a lot of time editing and re-editing my CV in the past few months as I applied for various jobs and attempted to tailor my CV to each different application.
Interview Clothes
Additionally, a fantastic offering for students who are worried about being able to present themselves well when the interview stage arrives is the Interview Clothes Borrow Bank available now in the Student Information Zone (SIZ) on campus. Borrow a set of smart clothes, even shoes and accessories which can be hired for as long as you need them. There is even a private space in SIZ for you to try the clothes on.
GradFair
Finally, on May 3rd 2023, CareerCentral is running the GradFair from 11am – 3pm. GradFair is a wonderful opportunity for graduating students to meet with employers that have open vacancies and graduate jobs available. It can even help you if, like many of us, you still have no plan for what you want to do. CareerCentral career advisors will also be on sight to help you!
The transition into the world of work is a terrifying prospect, but it can be a little bit less terrifying if you are GradReady.
