Top tips on Figuring Out Your Next Steps After University

Hello! My name is Mirela and I am in the 3rd year of my Energy Engineering degree here at UEA, which means that I understand perfectly the stress that comes with figuring out your next step after university, or planning your career in advance. So, I have prepared for you a few ideas and resources to help you figure out what your options are and narrow them down to decide what you might want to do next. And luckily, the CareerCentral team have already thought about it and this February they are bringing you a series of events aimed to help you figure it all out: Connect with Careers taking place between 21st – 23rd of February. Day 1 is the Career Options day and there will be loads of useful sessions to explore and get involved in.

What did you enjoy during your degree?

The first step you can take is: think about what you enjoyed during your degree/the skills you have developed. This should help you find out what you like to do, and what kind of job would suit you best. Is it an office job, a lab based job, do you enjoy working with people and around people, are you a great communicator or not so much, are you hands-on?

Look at your Career Options

When you have the answers, have a look at the options available. Do you know what sector you'd like to work? Do you know what the different sectors are? If you have these questions for yourself, have a look at the Connect with Careers: Career Skills Sessions on the 21st of February, link here. There will be sessions about working in the Charities sector, Digital Media and Marketing, Professional and Financial services, and the Tech sector (even if you're not studying a tech related degree) – all there for you to explore. Just think outside the box, you never know!

Talk to a Careers Advisor

If you're struggling to figure out what your strengths are, or what you'd like to do, talk with one of the career advisors. In my experience they have always been helpful, and have pointed me in the right direction, either with some advice, or with some techniques and strategies I can apply to learn more about what I am good at. You can book an appointment with an advisor anytime, or you can stop by during one of the drop-in sessions on the 21st.

Try Networking!

When you have your skills and strengths figured out, and have an idea about what you'd like to do, but you don't know how to get there, start networking! LinkedIn is a great place to see what jobs are being advertised at the moment and talk to employers. Connect with people you admire and you want to learn from, you can even send them a message and ask for advice. If you want to find out more about how to use LinkedIn to help you progress with your plans, you can book a place for the "Using LinkedIn to explore careers" session. And if that sounds a bit too daunting, you can do something similar and join the Mentoring scheme ('How mentoring can help me').

Figuring out where to go next can be terrifying at times, but it is important to know that no matter what, you will get there! You just need to keep an open mind and explore your options until you find the right one. Regardless of where you are in your career journey, the other Connect with Career days could bring you some inspiration or a new opportunity. Explore internships and work experience opportunities on the 22nd and graduate jobs and further study on the 23rd. You got this!
