As SELLL students, we would be remiss to not spend some time talking about books - the one passion we all have in common. And what do book-lovers love possibly even more than the books themselves? Bookshops! With that in mind, here are our favourite bookshops in the toon!
Waterstone's
- A classic student haunt for good reason
- Great selection od books
- Always nice and aesthetic if you're looking for somewhere to grab a drink to trick yourself into doing work, this is the place!
Blackwell's
- Convenient location for on-campus book runs
- Great bundle deals for some SELLL modules
- Good selection of more obscure, literary texts so you can leave feeling adequately clever and mysterious
The Works
- The place to go for box-sets (get the whole Percy Jackson series for just £10!)
- Not as much choice but very good value so a brilliant budget option
Oxfam
- An underrated gem - lots of options for bargain prices
- Second-hand books are not only cheaper but better for the environment and always have the potential of having a mysterious note or sweet dedication hidden inside...
Seven Stories
- The national centre for children's literature and therefore a must-see for anyone studying a children's lit module
- Located in beautiful Ouseburn, so worth the journey if just for the scenery
Forbidden Planet
- A great option for fans of comic books or graphic novels
- Houses a wide array of nerd-adjacent merchandise and the largest selection of comics of any other shop on our list
Libraries
- Why buy a books when you can borrow one?
- Whether it's the Robbo or Marj or even a public one, libraries remain both vital parts of our communities and a great place to pick up your next read
Books for Amnesty
- Located a little out of the city centre, Books for Amnesty may not have popped up on your radar, but it is definitely worth a browse
- It boasts a wide selection of classics for very reasonable prices and all proceeds go to charity
