5 Types of Unique Construction Equipment and When to Use Them

Construction is a difficult, but important, business. Numerous types of machinery are needed to get things done the right way, although you'll need to ensure you have a considerable sum put aside before you can purchase everything you need.

Due in part to these costs, it's important to make sure you're going with the right equipment. That means understanding more about the machinery you're selecting. Looking at a few different examples may help get you oriented in the right direction.

Motor Graders

A grader is a popular construction tool when building roads. Its main purpose is to even and level out a surface, usually soil. Graders are also used to clear roads of snow or small debris. There is a blade positioned horizontally behind the front wheels; this blade lowers towards the ground during operation to smooth everything over underneath. The cabin is perched above the rear axle.

Tower Crane

Cranes are used to lift objects up high. Tower cranes, like most, but not all cranes, operate from a fixed position and are used to hoist things like concrete blocks and metal frames. The basic structure of a tower crane includes the main vertical body, known as the mast; the "arm" of the crane, called the Jib; and the counter-Jib, which counters the weight being carried by the crane and allows the lifting mechanism to function.

Boom Lift

This mechanism is sometimes called a basket crane, as it also performs aerial lifts. With a boom lift, a small number of workers can reach high-up spots to complete their tasks. You've probably seen one before, as many industries use them, such as:

  • Construction
  • Window cleaning
  • Forest work
  • Fighting fires

Vacuum Trailers

A vacuum trailer is essentially a large, industrial-sized vacuum system for use on a construction site. These vacuums connect to large tanks that collect whatever you are gathering, whether that be liquids such as water, solids such as mud or earth, or a mixture of the two. Vacuum trailers can be moved from site to site, and are extremely useful for transporting materials safely and efficiently.

Light Towers

Even when you do have the right equipment, there's no guarantee that you'll finish what you need to before the sun goes down. As a solution, towable lights are ubiquitous among construction crews for their convenience and simple use. These towers consist of powerful lights set above a narrow column, which is hooked up to a generator. Light towers are typically portable and keep workers safer in the dark.

When it comes to starting up a construction project, it's imperative that you have the right equipment for the job. Do you research using these recommendations and find the best equipment, and the best workforce, to get your job done safely, and just the way you want it.
