Three hours away from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, within the secluded Welgevonden Game Reserve, lies a gem of a romantic retreat for couples looking to celebrate their love, safari style.
Fifty Seven Waterberg was where we chose to stay for a couple nights, back in 2020 and then again more recently. It is really unlike any Big 5 Game Reserve lodge we have ever visited. Besides the adventurous opportunities to get up early (or stay up late) for life-altering wildlife encounters, you're also given the chance to experience 5 star luxury on a grand scale, with chic private villas, all-day fine dining, and a chance to customise your stay with tailor-made intimate experiences. The lush interiors (and equally-stylish cuisine on offer) seem to come straight out of a flashy Capetownian Waterfront establishment, but you very quickly remember that you are miles away from any major city, surrounded only by the sounds of hyenas and nightjars. It's truly a romantic retreat for couples.

Now you don't have to ask us twice to take some time off and celebrate each other, but if it's Valentine's Day, your anniversary, your special someone's birthday, or you simply owe it to yourselves to celebrate your love, Fifty Seven Waterberg offers a retreat like no other. Romantic dinner for two beneath the stars? Yes, that can be organised. Wine tasting in the diversely stocked cellar? Sure. Or if you just want to treat yourselves, and spend the day in your robes and order in…well then go right ahead.

You will notice as soon as you arrive, that there is a great sense of peace and tranquility – especially on the terrace of you private villa. What's nice is you get to choose how you spend your day. You, of course, get the option to go on two game drives each day, and there's a whole brochure of other activities available to you, but if you just want to sit in nature with your significant other, disconnected from the world at large, there couldn't be a better spot to do so.

We've all experienced this before – a brand over-promises, and boasts about their best features, only to let us down when we arrive, leaving us feeling a bit hard done by. We feel like Fifty Seven Waterberg does the total opposite of this. The lodge far exceeded our understanding of luxury in the bush. The team take all the touch-points into consideration, including (but not limited to) the luxury room amenities, the immaculate hygiene control, food and beverage on offer, customer service, and all the small details that often go unnoticed by many. It's truly a cut above the rest.

Ok, we need to admit that we LOVE food (so we had to include a separate section for others like us). Seasonal ingredients are at the core of the cuisine at Fifty Seven Waterberg, with all produce being locally sourced. The menu changes from season to season, ensuring only the freshest dishes are produced. You will notice from the get go that the chefs take great pride in their creations, and the tasteful art that they put on your plate will prove this. You won't be judged here if you Instagram your meals before eating them – and you should, they're well worth it.
A Romantic Retreat For Couples Who…Want To Unplug
In this day and age, unplugging and partaking in a digital detox is getting more and more important for your mental wellbeing. As we walked in we turned off our phones, and, to be honest, we didn't miss them at all. The lodge was the perfect place to connect with each other whilst experiencing everything a 5 star Game Lodge has to offer. Waking up to the sounds of nature and not having any of the modern world distractions that we normally do, was one of the highlights of our stay.
We have no doubt that whatever time of year you visit, and from whichever place you call home, your time at Fifty Seven Waterberg will be magical and romantic.
