Students and teachers at the Fleetwood Area High School were faced with shock when it was announced that the start time for school would be changing starting with the 2024-2025 school year.
Due to scheduling complications and student attendance, the school board made the decision to start the regular school day at 6:30 a.m. Debate has been going around whether or not this was for the best or if the start time should go back to 7:25 a.m.
A primary reason for this change is extracurricular obligations that occur in the early afternoon. The school start time changing means that students get to leave school earlier.
Many people are supportive of this change because it can add more time in the day for people to do what they want after school. In addition, this leaves more time for working at jobs, sports, and homework.
"I'm stoked. I'm a morning person, and this way, I can get home quicker and enjoy more of my day," Mrs. Sarah Wilkinson, an English teacher at FAHS, said.
On the other hand, people who are against this change say that getting up earlier in the morning impacts their sleep schedule, and students and teachers are more likely to be drowsy in the morning.
"Kids need more sleep to be functional throughout the day, and I know kids aren't going to go to sleep earlier to accommodate the earlier time. Grades will plummet because of this," AJ Jenkins, a student at FAHS, said.
Staff members are optimistic that this change will help with student attendance.
