For the start of 2024, many states and companies across the U.S. have been raising the minimum wage for their workers in response to numerous complaints.
January 1, 2024, was the day that many companies and states increased their minimum wage for U.S. citizens that are working in the U.S. Some Pennsylvania workers are wondering when their minimum wage will be changed in their state.
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. This is also considered to be Pennsylvania's minimum wage for workers.
There have been no plans on changing the federal minimum wage. It has been the same since 2009.
While other states have made changes to their minimum wage, Pennsylvania has not made any announcement to change theirs.
More than 20 states has decided to increase their minimum wage in 2024--Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Washington.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Washington has the highest minimum wage. Georgia and Wyoming have the lowest minimum wage, paying $5.15 if the federal regulations don't apply and $7.25 if they do.
"Public support for a minimum wage increase in Pennsylvania is above 70%," the Pennsylvania House Democrats said. "A living wage reduces absences, turnover and training costs; puts more money in employees' pockets that they can spend in the community; reduces costs to taxpayers; and helps boost the local and state economy."
According to Investopedia, many major companies have also decided to raise their minimum wage. Some examples are McDonald's, Starbucks, Walmart, IKEA, and Amazon.
"Amazon says it's boosting pay for contracted drivers who deliver millions of packages to customers every day," the Associated Press wrote. This act took place immediately at the start of the year.
