Hamburg once again invites students across Berks County to participate in the Hawk Olympics.
Students with physical or intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in an Olympic-style event. It's to be held once again at Hamburg School District.
The Hawk Olympics works similarly to traditional Olympic events: competitors participate in athletic events to earn medals. The purpose of this event is to open up opportunities for students with disabilities to experience a competitive, athletic scenario, have a day that is all about them, be filled with support from all of the spectators, and have an enjoyable time.
This type of event has been occurring in Berks County for many years.
"Kutztown University used to host an actual Special Olympics event, but they stopped hosting many years ago. A few school districts created their own so that students could still participate in a similar event. Hamburg invites multiple school districts, including ours," Avery Amico, Life Skills teacher at Fleetwood Area High School, said.
Hamburg invites districts across Berks County to compete, and Fleetwood has consistently been included. Any student who participates in any Life Skills class is welcome to be a part of and participate in these Olympics.
A variety of contests are hosted, meaning that contestants can choose from an assortment of options to compete in. The different types of events hosted there are shot put and softball throw, a 50- or 100-meter dash, standing or running long jump, basketball, and wheelchair activities.
The Hawk Olympics is especially popular with these student-athletes.
"About 123 special needs student-athletes from Hamburg, Tuplehocken, Fleetwood, and Kutztown participated in the Hawk Olympics," The Reading Eagle reports.
