4 Ways to Save Money and Materials for Your Business

Running a business involves creating and adjusting operational procedures to enhance productivity while reducing costs. You can significantly lower expenses by encouraging employees to practice these 4 ways to save on materials (and also money).

Create a Recycling Program

Commercial recycling programs can make quite the impact when the company offers the proper support and causes high employee involvement. It all starts by placing recycling bins in strategic places, such as the break room and printer room.

Once bins are in place, you need to inform people of the new recycling plan. Hold a meeting or send emails to encourage employees to participate. You should also ensure they know the rules, such as separating plastic and paper products. Buy supplies made from recycled materials. You can usually get them for a reduced rate.

Save Paper With E-Form Software

Physical folders and files get thicker and require more space and supplies the longer you work. Many of your files include signatures that give credibility to your agreement with a client. Other folders contain resumes and employee documents. However, most agreements and paperwork don't legally require a physical signature.

You can use E-form software that allows employees and customers to give you information digitally, saving paper, ink, and storage space.

When a document doesn't require a signature, avoid printing altogether. The unnecessary use of paper can also indirectly contribute to deforestation and the environmental issues that come with it.

Go Green

Deforestation isn't the only environmental concern you can take on throughout your work day. Modern technology operates much more efficiently than just a couple of decades ago. Your old air conditioner, gas stove, electric water heater, lighting fixtures, toilet, and refrigerator can be draining you of resources. For example, a traditional storage gas water heater has an efficiency factor (EF) of .6. However, an electric tankless water heater can have an EF as high as .95.

Upgrade old appliances to energy-efficient models the next time they require a repair. Look for the EnergyStar sticker to ensure the new product meets government standards for "energy-efficient."

Request Input From Employees

Your employees understand your business from a different point of view than you. Instead of silencing that perspective, embrace it. Frequently request suggestions and create an environment where employees feel comfortable enough to give you money-saving ideas.

You will constantly be on the hunt for ways to save money without skimping on quality at your small business. These tips can give you a nice head start.
